Wedding Do’s and Don’ts

Since wedding season has officially begun, I have been thinking about all of the things I wish I had done or known when planning my wedding day nearly six years ago. There was no such thing as Pinterest! Gasp! Am I really that old?!?

My wedding day was absolutely wonderful! But there are a few things I wish I had done differently, and a few things I did right, so I am sharing them in hopes you can make sure your own day is truly special.

IMG_0121 {DON’T} stress the small stuff.  Seriously, something will go wrong, even if it’s just something small like a bridesmaid wears the wrong earrings. Or the sound system cutting out during the middle of the ceremony {yep, it happened to us}.  But most people won’t even notice or remember those things.  They’re more focused on you— it is your day after all!

{DO} hire a videographer.  I know this seems like just an extra expenditure if you are already paying for a photographer, but it will be worth it.  This is something I didn’t do, and I regret it so much.  I love looking at the pictures from our day, but I so wish I could actually watch the wedding.  It’s such a blur in my memory now.

IMG_4935 {DO} hire a photographer. A good one.  This kind of goes along with the previous “do,” but you will have those pictures for the rest of your life.  Hire a good photographer and tell them ahead of time what shots you want {i.e. posed or candid, with certain family members or members of the bridal party, etc.}.  I am so thankful that I had the photographer that I did.  He was fantastic!

{DON’T} forget to have a minute or two alone with your new husband during the festivities.  Every time I turned around, Jeff and I had been pulled in opposite directions.  I was thankful we had a couple of minutes to ourselves between the ceremony and reception.

{DO} have bridal portraits done.  For some reason, I think cost, I didn’t have bridal portraits done.

IMG_0139 {DON’T} let someone talk you into something for the wedding that you don’t want to do {or talk you out of something you really want to do}.  Now, I’m not saying be a bridezilla and throw a temper tantrum whenever you don’t get your way.  But, if it’s something important to you or something that could really affect the wedding, stick to your guns.  One thing I had to put my foot down on was the number of guests.  My in-laws wanted me to send invites to all of these extended family members of Jeff’s that they never saw or talked to.  Due to limited space and cost, we could not accommodate all of those people.  Even though my in-laws didn’t think those family members would come {they just wanted us to send the invites as a courtesy}, I said no and I am glad we did.  It would’ve been so stressful if they did decide to come with the limited space we had.

{DO} enjoy YOUR day.  It is one of the few times in your life that the day is all about you and your new husband.  Enjoy every minute of it!

IMG_5085 Also, {DON’T} have an outdoor ceremony in August. It’s HOT. ;-)

Do you have an advice for soon-to-be brides? If so, share it in the comments!

***This is in no way a sponsored post, but I have to give my amazing photographer, Keith Ketchum, the credit he deserves!  Check him out at

Today is my husband’s 27th birthday!

As I was thinking a couple of days ago about his approaching birthday, I realized that we’ve spent 1/3 of our lives together.  WHOA.  We started dating in high school and in some ways that seems like just yesterday, and in others, it seems like that was a lifetime ago.

So in honor of his birthday, I thought I would list out 27 things that I love about him {and share some pictures of him that will make you wonder how we ever manage to get good ones}:

1 // His smile.

2 // His patience.

3 // His laugh {yes, this is different from his smile!  His laugh is infectious}.

4 // The way he loves his family.

5 // His loyalty— don’t mess with someone he cares about, it won’t end well for you.

6 // He’s tall!

7 // His curly hair {I sure hope our future kids get that from him! Mine is stick straight}.

8 // He’s a really good cook.

9 // He’s smart.  Like really smart.  He underestimates himself.

10 // His beard.  He grew it out about 18 months ago and I tell him all the time that he can’t ever shave it.  There’s just something about a man with facial hair…

11 // He’s such a gentleman.  To this day, he still insists on opening the doors for me whenever we are walking together.  He also holds it for anyone else around us.

12 // His respect for his parents and mine.

13 // His protectiveness for me and women in general {want to see him get angry, turn on an episode of SVU where a woman has been hit or raped or hurt in any fashion.  He’ll seriously turn it off or walk away he gets so angry, and that’s not even real}.

14 // His amazing ability to calm me down when I’m upset.

15 // His humor.  This man has me in fits of laughter a LOT.

16 // He’s introverted.  Since I am extroverted, this has helped balance me out over the years.

17 // He’s quite the craftsman.  He and his dad have built an entertainment center, a coffee table, and are currently working on a bed for us!

18 // He vacuums and scrubs the toilets.

19 // He loves video games {he’ll be very surprised to read this, because usually I complain about how much time he spends playing them, but really, I like that he has something he enjoys.  And I’ll take video games over football— or any sport for that matter— any day}.

20 // He challenges me.  He teaches me to be a better person.

21 // His hugs.  He can just envelope me and make me feel like nothing can ever hurt me with just a simply hug.

22 // His butt.  Sorry if that’s TMI, but he has one sexy rear-end.

23 // He’s a nerd.  And he’ll be the first one to tell you that.

24 // His dance moves {except for when we are in the car— he purposefully does it when others can see just to embarress me lol}.

25 // He is passionate.  Get him talking about something he loves and you might not be able to shut him up!

26 // He knows every word and can rap the entire “Ice, Ice Baby” song.

27 // He’s mine.  Sorry ladies…

An Interview with the Hubby

The other day, I stumbled on A Beautiful Little Adventure‘s interview with her husband, and I thought it was such a cute idea that I just had to do one with my hubby!

my hubby and my brother-in-law have a weird bromance

Me: What is the name of my blog?
Jeff: Simply Sophisticated Blog

Me: What do I typically write about?
Jeff: Umm… you usually do Five Friday post and you talk about Hashimoto’s and health stuff and your general opinion on things. {well that was good summary}

Me: What’s a popular fashion item for women right now?
Jeff: Shoes. {and then proceeds to literally laugh out loud}

Me: Why do women go to the bathroom together?
Jeff: I don’t know but when I was in middle school my friends called it the CBC “community bathroom club” and whenever we would see a group of girls going to the bathroom, we’d say “Oh there’s a CBC.”

Me: What do you know about Pinterest?
Jeff: It has ideas for everything in the world and people pin the things that they like.

Me: What is Hunter Wellie?
Jeff: A what??? I don’t know.

Me: What is our favorite thing to do together?
Jeff: Not clean. {omg this made me laugh out loud} We like the traditional dinner and movie date. We also like binge-watching shows together.

Me: What is the Pantone color of the year?
Jeff: Black.

Me: If you could have any job what would it be?
Jeff: I’d get paid to beta-test video games all day. {yes, my husband is a nerd}

Me: What about me?
Jeff: Stay-at-home wife with kids. called it! {let’s make that happen… SOON ;-) }

Me: What’s the best place to shop for women?
Jeff: LOFT {good boy}

Me: What does YOLO stand for?
Jeff: You only live once.

Me: What About OOTD?
Jeff: {quizzical look on his face} I don’t know. {When I told him what it stood for, he goes “oh shoot I did know that!”}

Me: What do I do when I’m home alone?
Jeff: Sit on the couch, blog, and watch Netflix or Hulu, and Facebook stalk.

Me: What is my favorite activity?
Jeff: See the previous answer.

Me: What do women keep in their purse?
Jeff: Everything. It’s like an extra-dimensional portal.

Me: And what do you do when you’re home alone?
Jeff: Play computer games, and watch TV shows, and think about you… {he’s such a suck-up}

Me: What’s my favorite accessory?
Jeff: It better be your Michael Kors watch {he bought it for me last year} but it’s probably your new Kate Spade watch {outlet shopping FTW}. Actually, it should be your wedding rings.

Me: What celebrity would you let me have a free pass with?
Jeff: None. You chose to marry me. Sorry.

Me: What celebrity would you like to have a free pass with?
Jeff: The author of the Simply Sophisticated Blog. I hear she’s pretty hot. {I cannot make this stuff up, I swear}

Me: What’s an acceptable amount to spend on a makeup item?
Jeff: $5. Realistically, $40, because makeup is ridiculously over-priced and a huge waste of money.

Me: What’s an acceptable amount to spend on a dress?
Jeff: $5. Hahaha realistically, $75. {I like this amount}

Me: What is your favorite trait about me, not physical?
Jeff: {he laughed when I asked him this… not sure how I feel about that} Uhh… your wit. You make me laugh.

Me: What’s my favorite TV show?
Jeff: Gilmore Girls.

Me: Who is a current celebrity “it” couple?
Jeff: I don’t know. Brangelina?!? {oh my gosh I laughed so hard}

Me: Anything else you’d like to say?
Jeff: Nope.

This was really fun to do! I laughed a LOT! If you decide to do onewith your husband, make sure to link it in the comments.  I’d love to read it!
